Welcome to the Permaculture Education Center

Permaculture Design CourseWelcome to the Permaculture Education Center. Our mission is to teach, consult, demonstrate, and help spread the word about Permaculture Design worldwide. The Permaculture Education Center is a not-for-profit venture, created by some of the leading Permaculture teachers in North America.

We offer the official 72-hour online Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course and the Introduction to Permaculture Course, complete with tutoring and support from some of the world’s top professional Permaculture designers and teachers.

Our courses are eligible for university course credits and continuing education credits. All of our courses are accredited internationally by the Permaculture Research Institute in Australia.

Permaculture Research InstituteOur teaching methods are interactive, creative and designed to provide a low-stress and enjoyable experience for students. Both the Introduction to Permaculture course and the full Permaculture Design Course follow the official guidelines for teaching Permaculture as directed by Bill Mollison. The PDC course follows the topics in Mollison’s book, Permaculture: A Designer’s Manual, which is considered by many to be the foundation text of Permaculture.

There are no exams, and students study at their own pace. There are homework assignments and activities that must be completed for each section of the course. The instructors carefully monitor progress and are available to assist students via email when needed. Our instructors are professional, patient and supportive, and are focused on the student’s needs.

The Best Online PDC - Period!

"We did our research, and PermacultureEducation.com offers the best online PDC - period." - Art Freeman, Earthaven Ecovillage

We are fortunate to be part of a global network with thousands of like-minded people and organizations, improving our communities and the world through teaching, consulting, and working in Permaculture, Ecological Economics, and related fields.

Our PDC students have a distinct advantage over other online PDC students because our courses are taught by active Permaculture Teachers from the Nashville and Asheville Permaculture Guilds. Our courses are not taught or led by just one teacher (as are all of the other online PDC courses). In addition, we actively manage and nurture a network of relationships with hundreds of Permaculture demonstration sites, local guilds, farms, ecovillages, and individuals - all over the planet. The result is that our students receive the latest up-to-date information, while learning from professionals who are actually out there consulting with farmers and homeowners, teaching Permaculture on the ground, operating Permaculture businesses, working in the community, and making a real difference.

"But I Wanna Get My Hands Dirty!"

Our online PDC course already includes several hands-on, outdoor assignments and exercises. However, if students desire more on-the-ground experience, we work with them find the appropriate opportunities with the best people in their area. We are passionate about finding and creating opportunities for our graduates to shift from "jobs" to sustainable, local, and meaningful livelihoods. The "Next Step" for many PDC graduates is: "Where do I get more on-the-ground training in .....?" Whether its Natural Building, Aquaculture, or Ecological Economics, every PDC student finds a "specialty" area that they love and want to learn more about. We are uniquely qualified to help PDC graduates at that stage because of our collective expertise and connections to the local Permaculture Guilds and like-minded organizations world-wide.

We are opening a new Permaculture Demonstration site and Education Center in Nashville soon. Students wanting to add more hands-on experience to their online PDC will be always be welcomed at this regional center once it is opened. We also often partner with local Permaculture sites and make arrangements for students and graduates to visit and have fun getting their hands dirty! In some locations, finding local Permaculture sites can be very challenging. In these cases students may be advised to travel to acquire more hands-on experience at a working Permaculture farm or site. If you own a Permaculture Demonstration site or farm and would be open to receiving our students and graduates for local on-the-ground experience projects, we would love to hear from you!

“The most remarkable feature of this historical moment on Earth is not that we are on the way to destroying the world - we've actually been on the way for quite a while. It is that we are beginning to wake up, as from a millennia-long sleep, to a whole new relationship to our world, to ourselves and each other.” ~Joanna Macy
